Adler Guerrier. Untitled (In Walked Bud), 2003. Lambda prints on aluminum. 13 1/4 x 20 x 1 1/4 inches, each. Collection Pérez Art Museum Miami, gift of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, Key Biscayne, Florida

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and currently living and working in Miami, Adler Guerrier interrogates the landscape and its relationship to individual and collective experiences through mixed-media drawings, sculptures, photographs, videos, and installations. Alluding to the tradition of the flâneur, the artist emphasizes the act of walking as an embodied experience anchored in observation and thought.

In the photographic work Untitled (In Walked Bud) (2003), the roving gaze of the artist shifts between the density of city life to the calmness of the domestic space. Focusing on his own home, Guerrier documents a corner of his backyard, inviting the viewer to look deeper into the composition of the place—its color, scale, texture, and heft. Framing the image through an oblique-slanted perspective and deliberately playing with closeness and remoteness, this work emphasizes the individual act of viewing as well as the dynamic relationship that exists between objects and observers. Juxtaposing contrasting viewpoints, Guerrier’s images hold our imagination and reveal the landscape as a multilayered space in which the poetic and the mundane are simultaneously intertwined.
